Speaker 2Welcome to the Dan Rayburn Podcast . I am Dan Rayburn , back for another week here with co-host Mark Donegan . We are recording on Friday , february 7th , two days before the Super Bowl . By the time you listen to this podcast , the Super Bowl will have already taken place , will have happened , yes , so we'll talk about that on the next podcast . It's been a couple weeks since Mark and I were out or back . I was out for medical , so , mark , I'm a little behind just in terms of all the news been catching up . So we're going to do a little bit of a free for all here today just in terms of covering a lot , of , a lot of different pieces of things . There's definitely some news just for listeners . We're not going to cover this week . You know , know , geez , you don't read news for two and a half weeks . It's incredible how much stuff you miss . Yeah , exactly , but I've caught up on most of it while also working on the nab show and prepping for the super bowl this weekend .
Speaker 3so it's , it's uh you've got a lot going on , dan . How is nab coming by the way streaming something ?
Speaker 2coming well . Let's cover that at the end . Okay , I'll mention some of those speakers and whatnot , um , but yeah , it's coming along really well . A lot of great progress in the last week , awesome , and I'll be pushing up a lot of content soon , so I'll cover that at the end . Let's jump in here to the super bowl . We won't do too much here , mark , because I think we'll talk about it more once it's over , yeah , but just a couple things here . So Sunday the Super Bowl is going to stream for free via Tubi .
Speaker 2I'm seeing all kinds of just ridiculousness that people are posting up here about the Super Bowl . As usual , it is not available in the Fox Sports app . Yes , it was previously . Yeah , but that will just redirect to Tubi , so you have to have the Tubi app or through the website . Now you can stream the Super Bowl on Tubi .
Speaker 2If you're logged in as a guest , you must sign up with an email or password , but it is free , though it's completely free . On the Fire TV platform , you can authenticate via your Amazon account . Interesting that , when I started updating all my devices , mark , last night to prep for Sunday , when you go to log in and if you want to use your Tubi email and password . You actually have to first hit the cancel button , which sends you to a screen allowing you to log in via QR code or activation code . So I thought that was interesting , and so Tubi said that they do a lot of testing beforehand and they feel this flow is better than providing lots of different options for sign in . Interesting , but naturally , as a consumer , the first thing when I'm trying to log in I'm not going to think I'm going to hit is the word button with the word cancel on it .
Speaker 3Yeah , seems a little odd to me .
Speaker 2So , you know , let's just see , let's just see what goes on there . Now I'm seeing all kinds of crazy comparison numbers all over the place as far as viewership and oh , because it's free this year , like you know , oh my god , the numbers will be huge . Well , let's just slow down , okay ? Last year it was on paramount plus . Yes , it's a subscription service , but there was a free trial during the super bowl so you could watch it for free . Last year and the years that Fox had the Super Bowl previously , the Fox Sports app did not require authentication . I don't know why people keep saying it does so . Last year , paramount Plus had an average minute audience of 8.5 million . So what's the growth going to be this year ? Don't know . So what's the growth going to be this year ? Don't know .
Speaker 2Across the last three years , viewership of the Super Bowl on Paramount , nbc Sports and Fox has averaged about 15% growth yearly . So 8.5 million AMA last year . Could Tubi hit 10 , 12 ? Yeah , I think they could . But this is not the caliber of Netflix NFL on Christmas , which is something else I hear people comparing it to , which is insanity , because that was a global event . Netflix had the rights globally . Fox has the rights in the US . It's not the same . And then also , finally , I see people saying well , you know , does Tubi know how to do encoding and this and that ? Okay , that's not what they're doing . So the entire Super Bowl workflow is being orchestrated , managed and delivered by the Fox team , just like they've done in previous years . Tubi is just the player that's playing it back . So Fox has their workflow ready to go . They have a team that are some of the best out there with large scale live events .
Speaker 2Now last year , mark , I flew out to Fox's headquarters under NDA , got to see their broadcast operations center , what they're building , how they're building . It was in their test and lab environment for some other products they were working on , environment for some other products they were working on . Uh , actually was planning to be with them there this year in headquarters , but I couldn't make it . Uh , but you know these guys . It was one of the most , if not the most , impressive facility I've ever seen , built from the ground floor up over 200 million dollars . Um , they are ready . Yes , so the only thing that you have to think about here is the 2B player . Is it ready ? Any API calls and whatnot ? It should be . There's a ridiculous amount of testing they've done beforehand . Some of that I'll be putting up in the next well , actually in the next day , but it'll already be up for listeners . That'll be part of my Sunday Super Bowl blog post . But trust me , these guys are ready .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 2Multi-CDN strategy as usual , so not a single source . Cdn Capacity's already there , it's already tested , so I don't expect any issues with the Super Bowl . Yeah , there's going to be the usual issues with a consumer complaining . Like I noticed on the tech support details , there's certain LGs that don't support the 2b player , so they made it very clear hey , you have to be running at least this lgos . Yeah , but how many people are going to know their lgos ?
Speaker 3yeah , yeah , you know , dan , um . So I just bought an lg tv and it fascinating thing , um I think it was two nights ago it updated nearly every app on the television .
Speaker 1Number one .
Speaker 3And here's what I thought was fascinating about that . My mind went to oh , I wonder if this is around the Super Bowl and people are updating the support whatever . And when I say every app , it literally wasn't . But there were multiple apps and I don't think it even told me which ones . But yeah , that's number one . Then last night it it um triggered me twice to update my tv os .
Speaker 2Oh interesting , yeah I don't know probably totally unrelated , but maybe not .
Speaker 3Maybe they're I'd have to pushing this out yeah , it would be interesting , though , just see if they're like hey , yeah , proactively , you know we're pushing all these updates out . So , people , because that'd be a real bummer to be ready to start the game , and then you know you gotta go update all your apps yeah , yeah , but that's .
Speaker 2That's the reality of the space we're in , depending on the platform that's true , but yeah , you know what I'll ask lg , that's an easy one .
Speaker 2A couple other tech details here . So the max bit rate is going to top out at 14.4 . Fox is capturing the game in 1080p hdr and they're upscaling it to 4k . They are going to digitally distribute that to virtual mvpd . So youtube tv all the usual guys will will have that . Yeah , um , so I expect quality quality to be very good . A lot of interesting stuff they're doing on the backend , just in terms of measuring , monitoring and whatnot . Um , whatever Fox , whatever information Fox gives me that they'll allow me to put out , I will . There'll definitely be some stuff that I can't talk to , but uh , they're they're really open about what they're doing .
Speaker 2I do expect them to come to the NAB show and do a technical presentation of just what the workflow was for the Super Bowl this year . So that should be really great to see and just have them put out more information on that . Also tying into the Super Bowl here , let's just talk to how Comcast and Dolby are teaming up . So for the first time the game's going to be available in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos . But keep in mind that's only for those that have a certain setup with Xfinity from a hardware standpoint . But not surprising that we see companies using the Super Bowl as a way to do more . Really , let's just call it testing of what's available .
Speaker 2And also we don't know what percentage of Comcast users will be able to get this , because Comcast will not say what percentage have this hardware set up ? Yeah , comcast will not say what percentage have this hardware set up ? Yeah , because you have to have an enabled device in the home . So we just don't know the details there in terms of percentage of viewership and they will not put it out afterwards guaranteed . But just as we've seen previous years , the Super Bowl is a once a year event where companies do like to use it as a way to see what else is possible , what's the experience going to look like and , depending on the device , and what's being pushed out as far as bit rates and whatnot . So I expect everything to be pretty straightforward . I'm not expecting anything problematic with the event , but we'll talk more about it , obviously after it's over .
Speaker 3And one other important point is just like . So , basically , comcast is redistributing Fox's streams , right ? So , just like Tubi is not doing their own encodes , etc . Correct ? Uh , comcast is doing the same . So the fact that it's 4k um dolby vision , uh , that's not native 4k , that's upscaled yeah , that's right , that's also very important yeah , yeah , everything's upscale .
Speaker 2I think it's interesting how and I'm not surprised and I'm not calling out fox for this , because cbs or paramount and you know others , disney have done it as well you know they call it 4K and inside the actual player in Tubi , you know it says 4K . But yeah , you're not going to say upscaled 4K because no consumer knows what that is ?
Speaker 3They don't know what .
Speaker 2That is Right , and you know what . It doesn't matter for us in the industry . Yes , we do care whether it's upscaled or not . Now I did look up . Last year the P plus stream maxed out at 12 megs , so the fact Foxes will be 14.4 . Okay , not too big of a difference there . Last year , paramount peaked at 30 terabits across CDNs . They had four CDNs set up , of which they actually only pushed traffic Most of the traffic to only two , just didn't need the other capacity . So Fox is set up the same way here . They've got multiple CDNs in the rotation . That's all good to go . I don't expect any issues there , so we'll cover more of that once the event's over .
Speaker 2Let's go to some other Fox news here . So in Fox's Q2 fiscal 2025 earnings call , their CEO announced that they plan to launch a D2C streaming service within six months and it's going to be a mix of news and sports using quote all of our content of sports and news . So we don't know exactly what it's going to contain . As of yet , we don't know the price point . All they said is they'll discuss more plans in the coming months , but they did say they aim to target those who don't subscribe to cable TV and they're not trying to make this a replacement to the cable TV bundle . So content , you know , is this going to include all of Fox News , fox Nation , everything and live ? We just don't know as of now .
Speaker 2Mark , I thought it was odd that a couple even major news outlets was Fox launches TV , you know app service , and I'm like , well , no , they didn't launch it . I thought that was kind of odd that some big guys got that wrong . I just say the other thing on Fox that they commented on was the CEO talked about the planned obviously not coming out now venue service , and he said quote the legal distractions around the business became increasingly difficult to bear . So I don't think that surprises any of us . No , but you just see them talking a little bit more about what they were thinking with venue . And now that skinny bundles are able because of the Disney relicensing carriage deals , then you just really didn't think had a place in the market anymore .
Speaker 2So it makes sense , let's go to . Let's do some packaging deals here around sports . So we've got two sports deals so this one's a little older and we didn't get to cover it last time but DirecTV has launched what they're calling my Sports Package . It's 40 channels and they're going to be rolling it out into more cities New York , los Angeles , chicago , philly and San Francisco . More are coming . It's 70 bucks a month . If you sign up before the end of this month , it's $50 a month for the first three months . You can also do a five-day free trial , which is really good .
Speaker 2So I had a call with DirecTV Mark I'll recap that as another time , but it was very interesting to hear their strategy , what they're thinking of here . There'll be some additional announcements coming out with additional content coming to the service , to the packages . They're really looking to be an aggregator and be flexible . Also , you know , one could just also maybe assume that down the line there's some deals done with RSNs which would make this definitely a lot more interesting because , for instance , in New York right now they don't have SNY and MSG .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 2So for me it's not that interesting . However , if you start adding RSNs , it's kind of a different mix now of content you can get . So this is definitely one to keep an eye on . They're also going to announce at a later date they haven't said when yet Additional packages that are going to be around kids and family programming . So that's interesting as well . We did have a little idea they were going to do something like this because they inked that new deal with Disney last September as far as licensing goes .
Speaker 2But interesting on the sports side , the amount of content that they're actually including here the list is too long to cover . It's in 24 major metro markets , total , uh . It's in 24 major Metro markets , total , uh . And they're , they're going to go across the U S , you know , over the next 12 months and a lot of other , a lot of other locations , and you can . You can get this Roku fire , tv , apple , all the , you know , all the usual places , uh . So , uh , I'm , I'm playing around with that a bit . I'll start looking at it more from a user interface streaming standpoint after the Super Bowl . But interesting , it's one to keep an eye on Now . If all goes as planned , too , we'll have an executive at the NAB Show Streaming Summit talking about this with me for 30 minutes in a fireside chat .
Speaker 2Yeah , that's great Trying to finalize that now if the executive schedule works . So be good to get some more information from them in person . So now let's flip to Comcast more information from them in person . So now let's flip to comcast who uh , this was on the 23rd , so about two weeks ago they announced the new 70 sports and news package . Sports and news yeah , so it's just over 50 broadcast cable news and sports channels , plus peacock . That's important to announce plus peacock so you've got NFL , NBA , NHL , MLB .
Speaker 2You've got NCAA in there Not obviously every game from every team . You know the deal if you're listening . Yeah , yeah , yeah . But super , super interesting that you've got two very similar companies as far as a MVPD standpoint rolling out what look to be two very different similar services . In terms of how they're packaging they're a little bit different .
Speaker 2Comcast is definitely pushing the X1 TV box with this Because if you have that , you can do multi-view and Comcast version of what do they call it enhanced 4K . Plus the remote gives you voice search . That's right . I see why they're pushing that more . On the hardware side , direct tv has their own hardware as well . They just yeah , they don't push it as much it .
Speaker 3It also gives them codec support . Um so , um , I am reasonably certain that the x1 supports um well , I was going to say it supports av1 . Uh , I might actually be wrong on that , but obviously it supports hevc , which , frankly , is now kind of ubiquitous across all connected televisions but you know there is a reason to have a set-top box .
Speaker 3There is an advantage when you know exactly what your endpoint is . All the supported technologies on there , um , you know it has its own challenge , right , because it's new today , but in five years it'll be old .
Speaker 2So then , yeah , but to your point , when you control the end-to-end from ingestions and delivery it's a whole different QOE experience .
Speaker 3Yeah , that's exactly right . One thing , dan , I found interesting in this announcement is that it said it's exclusively for Xfinity Internet subscribers . Correct , yes , which does make sense . And of course we understand the licensing issues and the rights . So that's why they can't just roll this out , you know , outside of their footprint .
Speaker 2Yeah , good point . Glad you brought that up .
Speaker 3You know I'm in a Cox area , for example , like I don't even have the , you know the option for X .
Speaker 2Comcast doesn't like you , Mark .
Speaker 3Well , they don't like Phoenix . Oh right , Phoenix . They doesn't like you , mark . Well , yeah , they don't like phoenix .
Speaker 2Oh right , phoenix , they don't like arizona no , nope , yes , but what happens if , all of a sudden , they decide to roll that out everywhere else ?
Speaker 1yeah , so just just watch .
Speaker 3Some additional news is my point .
Speaker 2I think we'll see some more on that one , but I think it's also interesting the packaging of content .
Speaker 3You know , frankly , it makes sense to me um sport because there's so many other ways to get entertainment . Get you know the movies effectively . Everyone has Netflix , got Amazon Prime , you get Max , and this comes with Peacock , which Peacock is really pretty good . There's some good stuff on there .
Speaker 2Yeah , putting in Peacock makes sense . The other thing too is thing too is I gotta give , you know , just shout out the comcast , because they were really the first one god , we'd have to look it up so many years ago . Who were all about hey , we want to be the aggregator remember they brought all those even netflix . They brought that to the set top box . Yeah , and people were like wait what ?
Speaker 3yeah , why yeah so ?
Speaker 2this is just . It's not new to them how they're packaging and obviously it's a little bit differently . Naturally the price point of these services is high , but it's sports . We know the cost of licensing here . There's a larger play on the business side , but definitely two , two interesting ones to keep an eye on .
Speaker 3For sure .
Speaker 2Let's jump into Disney earnings here . So overall , globally , disney lost 700,000 subscribers . For D+ they ended with 124.6 million . They also expect another quote modest decline in subscribers during the second quarter . Now Disney has changed how they report revenue and how they bucketed their company . So just note that if you're looking at comparing the numbers Mark and I are talking about today from , say , a year ago , a year and a half ago , they're not apples to apples . So Disney now reports Disney plus and Hulu together , but they do not add an ESPN plus . So the entertainment streaming business of Disney plus and Hulu had an operating profit of 293 million . So that's , that's a good thing . Yeah , um , you know , again some some profitability there . That said , I saw a couple people talking about like , oh my god , like disney's making so much money being profitable . Yeah , remember they lost 14 billion dollars , yeah , in their direct-to-consumer streaming service before they turned a profit . Yeah , so okay an operating profit .
Speaker 2So they got some ground to make up here . Yeah , let's not celebrate in their direct-to-consumer streaming service before they turned a profit . Yeah , so okay , an operating profit . So they got some ground to make up here . Yeah , let's not celebrate too much yet . Espn Plus lost 700,000 subs , so they ended the quarter with 24.9 million Interesting . Hulu Plus Live TV subs were flat from their previous quarter , so it's still at 4.6 million , and Hulu SVOD gained 1.6 million subs , so hulu has 49 million subs now at the end of 2024 calendar year , so getting close to getting close to 50 million .
Speaker 2Now a couple interesting things from comments here . From disney , they said quote we took prices up significantly fairly recently and expected the churn would be significantly greater . As it turned out , we delivered numbers that were better than we expected . Now I don't know what numbers they expected and words like significantly any word that ends in L-wide has no concrete definition , so take that for what it is . But the fact they came out and said that on a quarterly earnings call right . There's some things there that they have to be careful about saying right and backing that up . So clearly they thought churn would be higher internally than it was . They're also cracking down on password sharing . They said that will enable them to lower churn and continue to grow subs over time . Also important to note that , because of the new star india jv , the joint venture of which disney owns 37 , disney no longer reports disney plus hot star india as part of its d2c business .
Speaker 2So some are like , oh my god , all these numbers just disappeared . What happened to their subs ? Well , they didn't disappear . They're just breaking it out differently now For the full 2025 calendar year , which is not January and December , but for Disney's fiscal 2025 year , they expect $15 billion operating cash flow and $3 billion in stock buybacks . So those numbers haven't changed .
Speaker 2Let's go to Alphabet . So Q4 2024 , youtube ad revenue was $10.4 billion , up almost 14% . However and I'm glad Google called this out they said the 2024 US election drove the growth , since both political parties nearly doubled their spending compared to 2022 . Youtube's full year 2024 ad revenue totaled $36.1 billion . Google Cloud revenue was just under $12 billion , which was up 30% . Yeah , amazing , and this number . Google expects to invest approximately $70 billion in capital expenditures in 2025 , primarily due to AI . So I threw out Mark just quick on LinkedIn , just putting the numbers together from Amazon , microsoft , google and Meta . Now let this number sink in to listeners . Between those four companies , they've told Wall Street in the last week or two that they plan to spend more than $320 billion on CapEx in 2025 , driven mostly by AI . $320 billion , that's just , that's incredible . So these guys are all betting big on the services that they're going to offer tied to AI .
Speaker 3Yeah , it's really a spending arms race .
Speaker 2Yeah , it's a good way to put it .
Speaker 3And yeah , it really is 97% of that investment I mean , I'm making that number up , but I've heard some estimates in that range is ultimately going directly into NVIDIA's coffers .
Speaker 2That wouldn't be surprising ?
Speaker 3Well it is , and obviously there's a lot of data center buildouts around it .
Speaker 2I mean , it's not only GPUs , but it's mostly going to NVIDIA . Yeah , it's a lot of data centers as well , for sure . Yeah , NVIDIA , just looking at their stock , interesting projections . Well , DeepSea kind of hammered them there , which was an unusual anomaly it did , and also just the growth Wall Street wants to see . It's like hey guys listen . In the past 12 months , 12 months nvidia's stock is up 86 percent and yet some on wall street are like , yeah , but it should be up 150 exactly okay .
Speaker 3You're like okay , all right the largest tech platforms in the world just this year are going to spend more than 300 billion dollars . Most of that going to nvidia . You already know it , it's booked . It's incredible . Most of that going to NVIDIA . You already know it , it's booked . It's all like that . Money is all but spent . Already . You know that investment and Wall Street's like ah , it's not good enough .
Speaker 2Yeah , well , a lot of them have that already baked into the , of course .
Speaker 2If you look at the notes out from the institutional money managers . It's pretty interesting how they all look at NVIDIA . Yeah , many of them a little bit differently . Let's go to cord cutting . Okay , q4 . Charter lost 123,000 subs , comcast 311 . Verizon 60 . So three , four . So we're talking half a million subs already lost in Q4 , and that's without the numbers from Altice , echo , star and small guys like media , comm and wow . But actually it's a slow burn because the numbers , uh , for charter and for spectrum and I think yeah , for comcast too , are actually higher previously . So still cord cutting , but a little bit slower there . Yeah , more comcast news . So , uh , earnings q4acock subs are made the same in Q3 . Didn't go up or down 36 million . Peacock revenue is 1.3 billion on losses of 372 million . So Peacock is still losing money . Yeah , q3 loss , to put it in perspective , was 436 . They went from 436 down to 372 . Yeah , so progress .
Speaker 3Yeah , it's progress yeah .
Speaker 2Yeah uh Comcast ended 2024 with 12.5 million domestic video customers . Interesting that they lost 139,000 residential broadband customers and the Comcast president said on the call that uh quote losses were disappointing and worse than what we had indicated in early December .
Speaker 3I thought interesting I wonder I , I wonder where those people are going . Um , you know , I've had more people talking about starlink , uh , and interesting , I don't . I , I mean , I don't particularly know if that's a big enough factor , but I just wonder . Okay , I can't , I just don't see a scenario where , if you have internet service , you're just going to cancel it because you're like ah , I don't really need it , I don't use it . I mean , what you know ? So if they canceled , they went somewhere . So I wonder what they , who they went to ?
Speaker 2Yeah , it could also just be . You know , I don't think it's Starlink . I mean , I've got a mini kit and it's . It's great for when you need it , but I don't really see the vast majority of people cutting broadband at home , residential going to . Yeah , exactly . But for instance , I finally , just , you know , after having verizon , I was like , okay , this is an issue , like I'm just cutting over to optimum . But then you see , obviously optimum , uh , you know , doesn't necessarily always gain at the same level or the others that others use . So it ebbs and flows . I think also , mark I believe they also commented something about the hurricane impacted that I don't know how Comcast accounts for . Okay , there's a hurricane , or you have to move , or your service is disconnected for three months . You're now technically someone who cut your service .
Speaker 2I don't know that you canceled it .
Speaker 3Yeah , right .
Speaker 2So I don't know how that works , um , from a just measurement standpoint either . On their books , uh , interesting in that Comcast did say in the call that price increases are going to help pay for the new 11 year content deal with the NBA , but they didn't say price increases of what . So is that price increases of of Peacock ? Is it of the actual pay TV service ? Is it my set top bar ?
Speaker 3Yeah , your rental yeah .
Speaker 2I'm not sure , because games are coming to both NBC and Peacock starting to 2025 , 2026 season .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 2So the fact that they mentioned price increases ? Well , get ready , they're coming .
Speaker 3Yeah , yeah , get ready Inflation .
Speaker 2So something's coming there as far as higher prices , a couple of other things here , and we'll close this down . So this was yesterday , february 6th . U S bankruptcy court approved the sale of selected Egeo assets to Parler for $7.5 million . So I'll detail this stuff from Parler when they want me to , but what I can put out and did put out for now is the company is acquiring assets in approximately 25 global locations out of the roughly 160 that was in Egeo's footprint . So it's not everything , and it's software , it's IP , it's some hardware .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 2Um , I'll I'll break down more specifics , when they want me to , of of what they're actually acquiring asset wise . The best part of this entire thing is that parlor plans to hire 120 former edgy o employees .
Speaker 3Yeah , that's awesome . Which is awesome , yes .
Speaker 2And mostly engineers built out the , the edgyo employees yeah , that's awesome , which is awesome , yes , and mostly engineers yeah , built out the the edgyo stuff over time . So , uh , there's already a list that that they'd created before the deal was done . You know the the judge in the bankruptcy case had to approve just the whole thing , but they had a list ready to go . Um , I was talking with them just in terms of the details of who they are and just the type of person , and so it's mostly engineering , not surprising . So I'll detail the assets and some of those other things later . Parler's been pretty open about once they get some of this under their umbrella , really talking about why they took it , what they want to do with it , what they're building out for . So that'll be good . We'll have some more information . Yeah , that'll be good , we'll have some more information .
Speaker 3Yeah , that'll be , that'll be great . I'm , I'm really curious , uh , you know when you can talk about it like Rumble .
Speaker 2You know is is really built quite the uh , I mean , it's funny , you bring that up .
Speaker 3Yeah , they're much , much smaller than YouTube , but you know they are . They have emerged , you know , pretty quickly , especially around the free speech movement and , you know , as the video platform of choice and parlor , of course , was supposed to be like the original free speech social network . So I wonder if there it's .
Speaker 2It's changed and the path forward you'll notice will be will be a bit different in terms of the offering in the market . Yeah , but they're . They're working on some really interesting , interesting things and as far as just the tech and who they're targeting , so fascinating to hear their plans . Um , again , like super nice of them to continue to share it with me . But I've agreed , like I'll put it out when they say yeah sure but there's more coming there which will be fascinating to talk about .
Speaker 2I might also have them speaking mark at the uh an ab show streaming summit , talking more about their plans , because that's two months from now , so it may match up timeline . The other thing is there was also the sale of non-overlapping assets from Egeo to Encore Technologies for $1.5 million , so that was approved as well . We also have the news that the Bending Spoons acquisition of Brightcove closed earlier in the week . Obviously , as a result of Brightcove becoming now a privately held company , its common stock will no longer be listed on the public stock exchange . What is Bending Spoons going to do with Brightcove ? We don't know . They don't want to do any briefings . They're not interested in talking about it at this time , which is never really a good approach to take in the market .
Speaker 2It's not the approach I would take . Now , mark , I thought it was funny . Someone saw my post online about it closing . They're like hey , how come you didn't talk to bending spoon ? I said I did . I asked . They declined . They're like well , why didn't you force them to tell you what they're doing ?
Speaker 3I was like what do you think I am ? I'm forcing companies to do things now .
Speaker 2Yeah , thanks , that's not the approach .
Speaker 3I take You're going to send some of your buddies from the other part of your life to go knock on some doors , right ? Yeah , I don't know , they were just like why didn't you demand ?
Speaker 2And I was like demand .
Speaker 3Who do you think I am ?
Speaker 2That's like the last thing I'm going to do . They don to do , they don't want to tell me they don't need to yeah , exactly , exactly .
Speaker 3And , by the way , they are under no obligation , that's right , that's right .
Speaker 2Well , also , one would think that you know they're gonna hopefully make an announcement internally soon of just what's going to happen as far as employees and structure . Yeah , sure , sure and all that , and you know that is um the proper way to do it I wasn't going to ask about that .
Speaker 2I was going to ask more about just the platform and whatnot , but news is going to come out either way , so it's only a matter of time before we get something on that . What else we got , mark ? We saw a deal between Paramount and Nielsen . They figured that out and did a new deal . We'll talk about Nielsen stuff soon , cause I'm working on a lot of stuff there . It's still just nonsense . Nielsen and their reporting which is so tired of that .
Speaker 2Let's talk about the NAB show real quick here before we wrap up . So some great stuff in the NAB show , just in terms of presentations that we're going to have . Youtube the guys are going to come and talk technical I expect fox they're talking as well um , you know , paramount , wbd , uh , crunchy roll , uh , man , there's just a lot of really good companies . Comcast um , we've also got some stuff talking about , um , multicast , adaptive bitrate streaming , uh , terms of what Sky Italia is doing and what they've rolled out . We've got two sessions on live support streaming workflows . I am going to do a session Mark which I have not done in a long time on the current state of the CDM market , which should be interesting . But here's the thing I'm going to have some of the largest CDM customers talking .
Speaker 3Oh , wow , yeah , they're going to be on the panel .
Speaker 2So that way we can just clear up some of the nonsense people continue to put out there about the CDN market , which is pretty silly . Uh , we're going to talk about how to architect , uh , scalable cloud video stacks for streaming as well , uh , so we've got a lot of really good content coming . Packaging and distribution obviously is going to be interesting . Uh , we've got a lot of really good content coming . Packaging and distribution obviously is going to be interesting . We've got a lot of companies that are bringing some great customers and doing presentations . More case study . So I'm going to have more case study presentations this year than roundtable panels , which I like because we're getting more meat out of those . Yeah , uh , also , as far as I can announce , the two first fireside chats I'll be doing Uh , so one is going to be with the CEO of sky showtime Uh , so that one's in , and then also the CMO of LG ads . So we're going to be talking about ad stuff and CTV on TV , a couple others probably about another week away from actually talking about Uh , and then , in addition , we're going to have two happy hours . So we're going to have the big happy hour we always have on the balcony . Yeah , west Hall , third floor and Uplink Wowza , vimeo , fastly , imax , cdn77 , oracle , netskirt , hydraulics , ids , evergen I mean we just have a great lineup of sponsors for that too . So we'll have drinks , snacks , all that .
Speaker 2And then , mark , the night before , actually on Sunday April 6th , I'm going to host a CDN customer meetup . So if you're listening and you're a customer of CDNs and you're going to be at the NAB show , reach out to me . This is going to be a customer only meetup . Mm-hmm , a switch of of the people leading their CDN efforts , whether it's first party , internally , uh , whether it's third party CDNs .
Speaker 2And a lot of them have been asking hey , you know all these guys over here , my peers , can we meet them ? Can we sort of share information ? So , uh , I'm going to have a CDN meetup . You know who's going to be there ? Well , I expect , uh , you know , disney , fox , youtube , paramount , wbd , you know some of the largest customers of CDNs are all going to be there , private , keep it small , have a few drinks . So , if you're a customer of a CDN , you're going to be at the NAB show , hit me up on LinkedIn , shoot me an email , I'll give you some details . Again , it's just for customers that want to get together with one another . But that'll be great because you know they don't necessarily get to meet each other too often .
Speaker 3Yeah , really .
Speaker 2So I'm excited for that , yeah . And then we've got some other things we're working on at the summit just in terms of , you know , making a little more of a community . You know , the balcony this year is going to be open for the entire day , so people have a place to go eat lunch . We're not serving lunch , so don't get too excited , but we have a place now where everybody can go . So I'm super excited for the show . This year . We definitely have a lot more control over the venue . We're going to make the experience better for attendees . Thanks to Mobion . We're going to have everything captured , as always , made available on demand . If you're interested in getting involved anyway in the summit , now's the time to reach out to me . I would say 90% of sponsorships are sold out , gone . We always have sponsorships available , though , for the happy hour . That's easy , super affordable . But I'm excited and we are only wow , february 7th we're exactly two months away from today .
Speaker 3We are . We are technically yeah . Well , yeah , 60 days from . Yeah , nab is 59 days .
Speaker 2So yeah , technically they start the day before , yeah , so if you have any questions , nab Show , reach out to me . If you want a discount code a bunch of people listeners already have , which is great Send me a request linked in your email . I'll send you back a discount code . I can also create one for your company . I've been doing that for amazon and some of the big guys as well , which has been awesome . So I expect a great , great attendance , uh , and just really good meetups and meetings and in-person things . This year , which is the number one request we got was like hey , hey , more networking , more time to meet people .
Speaker 3Yeah , yeah . It's that information exchange . You know that chance to . You know that serendipitous conversation where you know two people talking and all of a sudden it's like oh wow , you're dealing with the same things that we are . How are you handling that ? What are you doing ? You know , you know that's . It's so valuable .
Speaker 2That's . That's why people are there right Solving problems .
Speaker 3today it is .
Speaker 2So that's what we got . We're we're going to be back on a regular schedule for the next two to three weeks before we take a one week break . But if you have any questions , let me know . We appreciate everyone listening . People are always reaching out . Something you want to hear about , let us know . Uh , next week mark , we're going to cover just what we saw from the super bowl . Uh , and then also we have uh , harmonic altice , fastly , roku and amc networks earnings , and then week after we still have a couple more . We got vimeo , akamai and a few others . So we still have a few earnings next week , but pretty much after next week we're out week . We're out of the earnings wrap up .
Speaker 1So that's good .
Speaker 2So any questions , let us know , mark , and I appreciate you listening . We'll be back next week . Everyone , have a good week , be safe .
